  • Approve Minutes of April 4, 2013
The commission approved the minutes of April 4, 2013.

New Business

  • Environmental News
Lauralyn updated members on HB 6519 (a bill requiring the labeling of GMOs in CT). Brendan Sharkey (Speaker of the House) is presently blocking a vote on this.

Ongoing Business

  • Outreach
Lauralyn reported that all participants at Old Lyme’s 2nd Community Earth Day were not only glad they participated, but would all be interested in returning for next year’s event. Members were asked to think about ways in which the event could be improved upon and discussion will take place at the next meeting. The FCCOL was generous in providing the space, but a larger venue will have to be considered to accommodate the growing list of participants. It should include an outside space for Bushy Hill’s animals.

George reported that the hike was a comfortable group and the enthusiasm was great.

Members agreed that the remaining Buzz Away towelettes should be stapled to the information sheets and be provided to the health department for residents who come in with concerns regarding mosquitoes.

Members agreed to submit an article on mosquitoes for the next issue of Events.

  • Rogers Lake
Linda reported that she planted the barrier garden earlier in the day. She stressed the need for a weed mat to be placed over the phragmite area to curb growth.

Sue reported that mats were funded in the budget and that the use of herbicides
was tabled. There is a speaker scheduled for the May 8th meeting of the RLA who
will be sharing his vast experience with methods for controlling invasives in CT
lakes. This scheduled event has been highlighted by Lymeline. Sue will invite the
selectmen and Board of Finance members.
Sue noted that Tom Sherer is compiling a list of rowers who will take part in
community service by assisting with the placement of the weed mats.

George is ready to install the post that will hold the receptacle for the new doggie
     poop bags at the lake.

The meeting adjourned at 8:53 pm.
Lauralyn Lewis, Secretary
